Hunger Action Month: How Catholic Charities of North Louisiana is Helping Eliminate Hunger in our Communities
September is Hunger Action Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness about hunger in America. Did you know that North Louisiana’s food insecurity rate is higher than the national average? Our state as over 777,000 people who do not have consistent access to enough healthy food. Through our Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits Assistance Program, Catholic Charities of North Louisiana is committed to helping individuals ensure that they can feed themselves and their families.
SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford nutritious food essential to health and well-being. SNAP benefits allow families or individuals to purchase food for a household such as fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy products, breads and cereals, and even seeds and plants that produce food. Alleviating the cost of food provides families or individuals with some relief in their budgets, allowing them to then prioritize other items such as bills, gas, school supplies, etc.
We strive to ease the process in enrolling in SNAP and ensuring that families in need can get nutritious food on their tables sooner rather than later. We can assist with first-time enrollment, renewals, updates to applications, faxes and translation services required to complete an application.
