Volunteer Recognition
A Catholic Charities of North Louisiana Program

Working with the young women who come to Gabriel’s Closet for assistance is a challenge for the wonderful volunteers who manage and work in the closet week after week. It is work they do not take lightly and work that is fulfilling and rewarding. That’s the consensus from De Allen, co-manager and Betty Merts, our newest co-manager (filling in for Amy Dean who is on hiatus).

These wonderful women spend significant one-on-one time with their clients, listening, comforting, mentoring and teaching. Teaching, that’s an element that we’ve found is so important for the kind of inspiration and growth we hope to see in each young woman.

We have always had classes available that are taught by retired nurse, Shirley Cashio. Her classes teach vital information in infant and child care and safety. We have interesting and entertaining videos and books available to the students to help them care for and raise their little ones in the best possible way and we have recently added sewing classes, taught by Donna Collins. Donna relates that the students share more than the new sewing skills they acquire. They share fellowship and the rare opportunity to be with other women, to create, to laugh and to learn while their children are safely attended to by other volunteers. What a great win-win situation. We are so grateful to all our fabulous volunteers!
